While there are a ton of great features that came with OS X Mavericks, the new version is not without its flaws. I’ve heard some complaints about iMovie, incomplete downloads, problems with the Mail app (although an update has come out for that), and issues with multiple monitors.
iMovie
Some of the issues people are complaining about when it comes to iMovie are, first of all, it’s extremely slow compared to iMovie 9. Another main complaint is that you can’t organize your events on external hard drives anymore. If you produce a lot of movies, there’s no way you’re going to have space on your MacBook Pro’s hard drive.
Incomplete Downloads and Other Downloading Issues
I’m reading reports from all over the place of people having installation problems like hard disk errors, incomplete downloads, and stalled installations. The main thing to remember was that most of the incomplete downloads and stalled installations were due to the huge numbers of people trying to download it all at the same time.
If you get a hard disk error, press and hold down Command-R right after you hear the chime when you start up your computer. This reboots the recovery partition and you can run Disk Utility to go through with a disk repair. When that’s finished, just restart and resume the installation.
If your installation stalls, wait an hour to see if it starts again. If not, quit or force-quit the installer, reboot, and try again.
The overlying issue with the Mail app is that it didn’t seem completely compatible with Gmail. Users experienced long delays for messages to appear in their Inboxes, the app re-indexing folders, and some inboxes showing as empty when they were really not.
This week, Apple put out Mail Update for Mavericks 1.0 that addresses several problems such as instability issues and compatibility with Gmail. If you’ve had any concerns, you should definitely check out the update to see if that helps.
Multiple Monitors
If you use a second (or multiple) monitor that uses a DisplayLink driver, you might have noticed that there are problems with mouse movement. Another problem you might run into is a flickering when running some apps, or display arrangement difficulties.
Of course, any new operating system is going to have bugs. The great thing is that it will run on any computer that will run OS X 10.6.8. You’ll get a lot of great new features like Tabbed Finder, Tags, and a bunch more; increased battery life; and enhanced security.
