Samsung email: Steve Jobs’ death “best opportunity to attack iPhone”

On October 4, 2011 Tim Cook announced the iPhone 4S, scheduled for release 10 days later. The announcement also talked about iOS 5 and announced Siri.

The same day, Samsung Telecommunications America was talking about this announcement, and referenced a feature checklist comparison by Fierce Wireless contrasting the Galaxy S II, Motorola’s Droid Bionic, BlackBerry Bold on BlackBerry OS 7, and HTC Titan on Windows Phone 7.5.

The next day, Jobs passed away and his death was announced. Samsung executives were then emailing one another about the news, and said that Steve Job’s passing created a large amount of press coverage of Apple and the iPhone. They then decided that they should use this “opportunity” to attack the iPhone.

NPD reported that in the following February, Samsung’s Galaxy S II was the fourth-bestselling smartphone in the U.S. The iPhone 4S was first, iPhone 4 was second, and iPhone 3GS was third. Since then the company has been going on marketing pushes whenever the next iPhone is released.
