On Tuesday Google started to sell its Glass product to any resident of the U.S. The company announced ahead of time that the sale would only last a day, and then it’d go back to the invite-to-purchase system used before. No discount was offered, so the device set back customers $1,500 (and tax) for the device. It came bundled with either sunshade lenses or a prescription lens frame. Google stated before the release that the numbers were limited.
Google apologized on its Glass sign-up page, stating “We’re out of spots in the Explorer Program for now,” followed by a sign-up form. This form would notify potential customers if another general public sale is started later in the year.
It’s expected that another one-day sale will be held soon, since Google is intending to launch a cheaper consumer version of Glass by the end of the year.
