Leaked iPad Air 2 panel shows switch to integrated LCDs

One More Thing published a set of images on Friday that claimed to show the next-generation iPad Air LCD straight from a source in China. The source states that Apple is looking to further reduce the thickness of the iPad Air by moving to an integrated LCD panel.

Currently Apple uses separate LCD and panel parts for the iPad range. This has some benefits; namely, if either the LCD or panel breaks independently, it can be fixed easier and cheaper. However it does add a few extra tenths of a millimeter to the frame. Whilst that might not sound like a lot, Apple engineers and designers want to reduce the size of its products as much as possible. For instance they’ve moved to largely soldered-in components in their MacBooks to reduce the thickness, at the cost of reparability. There’s no reason why they wouldn’t do the same to the iPad.

Of course Apple doesn’t have to just make the device thinner: they could instead retain the thickness but offer a larger battery or more powerful components. Once some rear shells of the next-generation iPad Air starts to leak, we’ll be able to tell what Apple will do.
