First Generation Apple TVs not connecting to iTunes

According to a lengthy Apple Discussions page, Apple’s first generation Apple TVs have lost their ability to connect to iTunes. It looks like the issue is affecting users worldwide. Even after the typical diagnostics, including rebooting and restoring, nothing will help solve the issue.

The start of this outage coincided with FaceTime not working for iOS 6 users. This suggests that Apple has done some internal changes that have affected legacy platforms. Users initially thought the updates that broke communication were related to the Heartbleed security issues. Apple denied that Heartbleed affected “key services” but didn’t elaborate on what that might be.

The first generation Apple TV was released in January 2007 and was removed from sale in September 2010. Since then Apple has released two other Apple TVs (2nd generation and 3rd generation). The first generation Apple TV was vastly different to its successors. It runs a modified version of OS X (newer models run a modified version of iOS), features local storage and is physically much larger.
