Amazon launches new all-you-can-read ebook plan, Kindle Unlimited

In recent years we’ve seen the move from individual music downloads (like iTunes) to subscription services (like Spotify). Amazon is now trying to do the same approach with the ebook market, and is giving subscribers access to more than 600,000 books for just $10 a month. Provided you read at least one book a month, this is a good deal (since the average eBook price is $10 on the Kindle Store).

Books offered include the “Hunger Games” trilogy, the “Harry Potter” and “Lord of the Rings” series and the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” books. The titles are similar to those offered through local library rentals and the “Kindle Owner’s Lending Library” available to Prime subscribers. However this service gives you unlimited access (not one book a month like the Lending Library) and is available on non-Amazon hardware including Apple’s iPad. There’s also no restrictions on borrowing times.

The service also includes more than 2,000 audiobooks, similar to the company’s Audible service. Subscribers will get a three-month trial to Audible, which offers listeners access to over 150,000 audiobooks.
