Most rumors and leaks suggest that the iPhone 6 will have a Sapphire Glass display, to protect it from damage and scratches. However Apple’s sapphire supplier in Arizona (GT Advanced Technologies) might not have enough displays to meet demand. Therefore, some reports claim that Apple will restrict the Sapphire displays to their more expensive models, like the 64GB iPhone 6.
Apple predicts that the iPhone 6 will be a huge hit with customers: so much so, that the company has ordered 68 million iPhone 6 units from suppliers. NPD DisplaySearch is reporting that GT Technologies might only be able to produce 45 million sapphire displays, some of which they believe will be for the iWatch. So Apple has a decision to make: only release 45 million (or less) iPhone 6’s on release, and suffer almost certain sell-outs, or restrict the Sapphire display technology to the higher-end models.
NPD DisplaySearch also has one of the largest predictions for GT Technologies production ability: JP Morgan believes Apple will only get its hands on 10 million Sapphire displays this year. If production is that low, then Apple might have to only add sapphire display to the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 with 128GB of storage (the most expensive iPhone 6 on sale from Apple).
