Apple bought $5bn of AAPL stock in Q3, shares rose 20 percent in quarter

Near the end of Q3 2014, Apple spent $5 billion buying its own shares off the market. Since the start of the financial year Apple has spent $28 billion - and it’s proved to be a good investment. Apple has purchased stock at average share prices between two-thirds and three-quarters of the current stock price. In the June quarter their average share buy back price was $85.23 - currently the share price is $97.67 (since market close on 25th July).

Apple’s buyback program is the largest stock buyback program since the SEC made issue repurchases more transparent in 2005. And thanks to the share price collapsing after the iPhone 5 launch, Apple was able to buy back a lot of stock relatively cheaply. In total Apple has spent $51 billion on buybacks and over $21 billion on dividends since the start of 2013’s financial year. Since then their cash holdings has grown from $121 billion to $164 billion. Apple has set aside another $39 billion to buy back shares by the end of 2015.
