Popcorn Time is a new piece of software, launched this year, that provides a Netflix-like interface for movie torrents. Since almost all movies are copyrighted (especially big blockbusters like The Wolf of Wall Street), the software has very questionable legal status. If you live in the U.S. or Europe, where anti-piracy laws are very strict, we’d advise avoiding using Popcorn Time.
Popcorn Time was shut down earlier this year by its original developers, but because it was open-source, many teams started developing their own versions of the software (called forks). The most popular and feature-full fork, called Time4Popcorn, has added support for Apple TV. It also intends to support iOS devices in August. Currently Time4Popcorn has Android support and runs on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.
The AppleTV compatibility only works on Windows currently, but the team claims that it’ll support the feature on Macs in the next few weeks. It works using AirPlay from the Windows computer to the Apple TV.
