The company’s manager for global and brand told a reporter that Microsoft is “going for more of a rational appeal” in its latest campaign. The ads were released this week, with Microsoft comparing its tablet to a MacBook. They’re a lot like the “Get a Mac” ads featuring John Hodgman and Justin Long. The question is: will the more logical ad campaign win people over?
The commercials aren’t overly charming, nor are they funny. Instead, they focus on what the Surface can do that the MacBook can’t. For example, it has a touch screen, you can write on it with a pen, and it can, supposedly, replace your laptop. Honestly, one has to wonder if these ads will even have much of an effect; the Surface Pro 3 is insanely expensive for a tablet (more than $800 for the base model with only 64 GB and the Intel Core i3, going up to over $1500 for the 256 GB with an Intel Core i7. And those prices are just for the tablet; you still have to buy a keyboard and case!
