Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the last year or so, it’s anticipated by many people that Apple plans to release a smartwatch (the iWatch?) either late this year or early in 2015. Some analysts (and armchair analysts) believe it’ll be a flop because it won’t be able to live up to the huge success of the iPhone. We think that’s a little premature, because there are a lot of applications that could work with the iWatch that wouldn’t be as practical on the iPhone. It could, for example, be one way for Apple to have a way to increase how users pay with their device instead of their wallets. If Apple made the smartwatch a payment platform that could replace a few or all of the cards you carry every day, a lot of people might go for that idea. The main issue right now is that not a lot of vendors offer this option, and so not a lot of tech companies want to develop that tech. Well, if Apple subsidized retailer payment terminals, well, that technology could really take off.
Recent reports indicated that Apple sat down with Visa and talked about using WiFi or Bluetooth instead of NFC.
