Two different suppliers for Apple said that production for the display panel had to be put on hold and revised for part of June and July, which isn’t great news for the upcoming launch. Even now, suppliers are rushing to try to get enough screens ready. The iPhone 6 will be launched in September and will be available, hopefully, in October or November. The suppliers weren't sure if that delay could impact the launch or reduce the number of phones available on the initial shipment. This is the second screen tech issue; the first was the demand from Apple that the screens be thinner than in previous versions.
The setback this time had to do with the backlight that helps light up the screen. Because of the desire by Apple to make the thinnest screen possible, initially the desire was to switch from a double layer of backlight film to a single-layer. The new configuration, however, was not bright enough, and so the backlight had to be re-designed. According to the supply chain sources, production is now back on track and everyone is working at extra-high levels to try to make up for all the lost time.
