Apple updates App Store Review Guidelines

Apple released a set of developer rules for HealthKit in the last beta of iOS 8, and on Tuesday updated it App Store Review Guidelines to stop apps from storing health data in iCloud. It will also cover upcoming frameworks like TestFlight, HomeKit, and app extensions. The new info was added to the App Store Review Guidelines web page.

Last week, Apple offered the restrictions for HealthKit and noted that apps that sell or share personal user info to ad networks would be rejected. Further, apps that store data in iCloud are also restricted. This answers concerns over how Apple plans to control the personal data collected by apps used on iPhones and wearable devices.

With the HomeKit smart home framework, Apple will require all apps using the API to have a primary purpose of offering home automation services and must say so in any marketing materials. Apps will be prohibited from using data gathered for advertising purposes and will also not be permitted to perform use-based data mining.

When it comes to app extensions, Apple will require basic compliance with the App Extension Programming Guide that is given to app developers through the Developer Portal in addition to other limitations that have to do with keyboards. Apple will not tolerate in-app purchases, ads, or marketing in app extensions.

Developers who use TestFlight get their own rules; for example, apps must be meant for public use, all projects have to comply with App Review Guidelines, and developers have to submit software for review whenever a new build has functionality or content changes.
