Apple introduces new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

Tim Cook took the stage at 1:05 pm, the same time Steve Jobs introduced the iMac at the Flint Center. He said “Today, we are pleased to announce the biggest advancement in the iPhone.” The new iPhone 6 is thinner and larger than the iPhone 5C and 5S. Displays have the full sRGB wide-color gamut. Both have a Retina HD display. The iPhone 6 has a resolution of 1334 by 750 with 326 pixels per inch; this provides more than 720p Retina HD display.

That’s not all! There’s also a larger iPhone (like we’ve reported for weeks)! The iPhone 6 Plus has a resolution of 1920 by 1080 with 401 pixels per inch that provides a full 1080p HD resolution. The iPhone 6 Plus has a new landscape view, and even the dock goes to a vertical display so when you’re in landscape mode, the icons are too. When in supported apps, the landscape mode separated functions like on the iPad. In Mail, for example, you can see your Inbox on the left and when you click on an email, it opens on the right side of the screen.

When it comes to thickness, the iPhone 6 is 6.9 mm thick and the iPhone 6 Plus is 7.1 mm. Compare that to the iPhone 5S: it is 7.6 mm thick so these are the thinnest iPhones yet.

Inside, the new iPhones are powered by the Apple-designed A8 chip, which has up to 25 percent faster processing power and 50 percent faster graphics than the 5S. This processor is a whopping 50 times more powerful than the original iPhone! It’s also up to 50 percent more energy-efficient, too.

Other highlights:

  • Top game developers commit to delivering iPhone 6 titles before the end of 2014
  • The M8 coprocessor continually measures motion data from the compass, gyroscope, and accelerometer.
  • There’s a barometer, which will be great for fitness apps
  • The Health app in iOS 8 measures physical activities and apps will be able to access this information
  • The iPhone 6 supports Voice-over LTE
  • The 8MP iSight camera is even better

The iPhone 6 will start at $199 on a two-year contract and the iPhone 6 Plus will start at $299 on a two-year contract. They are available in gold, silver, and space gray.

Stay tuned for more!
