Apple discontinues iPod Classic

Apple quietly announced that it was discontinuing the iPod Classic with the thumb wheel design by removing it from the online Apple Store. The device, with its iconic click wheel and 160 GB memory is loved by and will be missed by tech and music lovers around the world. It’s been available for about 12 years now and has had several updates, but the main features stayed the same. It’s kind of sad, really, because this is the device that launched Apple into its current spot in the tech world; it certainly wasn’t the first MP3 player available, but it was the best, and it’s the only one that is still around after all these years…or was, anyway, until this week.

The iPod was released in October of 2001, and cost almost $400. It was easy to use, stored a huge amount of music, and was just…better than all the others available at that time. Everyone could pick one up and use it, unlike some that had ridiculously unfriendly user interfaces. The only problem with the device (like all others) was that you had to get music from a CD onto your computer and then transfer it onto the iPod. iTunes wasn’t a reality until 2003. That was the beginning of the end for CD sales, and digital music has grown rapidly since. These days, a lot of new singles are released only in digital stores.

Don’t despair, if you’re a music lover who needs a dedicated music player; there are various versions of the iPod touch, nano, and shuffle available, for now. It seems an increasing number of people are moving everything onto their phones, and we could see a day where the separate device is seen as impractical.
