Rumor: Apple will launch 27-inch iMac with 5K Retina display at October event

A new report on Monday announced that Apple is going to upgrade the 27-inch iMac to a Retina display. It will have a 5K screen resolution with 5,120 by 2,880 pixels, which is double what it has now.  The report, by Jack March, also says that the new iMac’s screen will have AMD graphics, compared to the Nvidia GPUs in current models, and will have an Intel i7-4790K processor. As of right now, the 21.5-inch won’t get Retina graphics but might once Intel’s Broadwell chips are available.

The first Mac with a Retina display was the 15-inch MacBook Pro, which came out in mid-2012. The smaller, 13-inch version came out later that year.

Apple will likely have a media event in October to introduce the next-gen iPads with the expected Touch ID fingerprint sensors and the new iMac with Retina display. According to sources close to the company, Apple is also working on a new MacBook Air with Retina display and possibly an overhauled Apple TV set-top unit.

Rumors of a large iMac with Retina display have been going around since the beginning of the summer, when the possibility was leaked in the OSX Yosemite code. There has also been some corroborating evidence stating that the Retina iMacs are being tested at Apple.
