Federal Trade Commission asking Apple about health data protection

The U.S. FTC is looking to Apple for assurances that it will stop sensitive data collected from being used without consent. According to people familiar with the company said that Apple reps have met several times with FTC officials in the past few months. Those reps have been stressing that the company will not sell the health data of its users to third-parties like marketers, and will not allow third-party developers to do so either. Apple has said it works closely with regulators like the FTC around the world to set out built-in data protections. According to Apple, HealthKit, the platform that will manage the data from mobile health apps, was developed to give users control over how that info is shared and used. As of right now, there are no signs that the FTC plans to launch a formal inquiry or investigation, but the meetings show us that the agency is concerned about the privacy of users’ health and fitness data.
