More info about the Apple Watch

When Apple made the WatchKit SDK available yesterday it told us a lot about what the device will be like when it comes out next year. First off, as we already knew, it won’t be a standalone device; people will have to also have an iPhone. The apps on the watch will actually run on the iPhone.

We now know the display resolutions of the two Apple Watch sizes. The 42mm one is 312 x 390 pixels and the 38mm one is 272 x 340 pixels. This means they are Retina displays but we’re not sure how sharp they will actually be. It’s possible that they could be on the level with the iPhone 5, which means the Apple Watch will have a better display than the Samsung Gear S.

Another thing we learned is that Apple came up with a brand-new font for the Apple Watch, called San Francisco, which uses less horizontal space. It looks kind of like Arial.

There are two kinds of notifications for Apple Watch: the Short Look, which gives a small amount of information when you raise your wrist, and the Long Look, which will provide more info if you keep your wrist up or tap on a Short Look notification.
