A judge gave final approval to Apple’s agreement to pay $450 million to resolve the eBook conspiracy case. U.S. district judge Denise Cote said that the proposal was “highly unusual.” Apple will pay $400 million to up to 23 million people if it loses the appeal ruling that found Apple liable for antitrust violations. This is on top of what Apple has already paid in an earlier settlement where the five publishers involved had to pay a combined $166 million to eBook buyers. Apple agreed to the newest settlement in June in the case where it was expected that the attorneys general would ask for up to $840 million. The deal will allow Apple to continue with its appeal; $400 million will be paid to buyers and $50 million to lawyers if Judge Cote’s findings are upheld on appeal. If Apple wins the appeal, the company will pay nothing.
