Unlike other stores which will be open Thursday night in advance Black Friday sales, Apple isn’t offering any door-crasher sales. Instead, Apple is running a two-week charity event to raise money for (RED), the non-profit organization started by Bono to fight HIV/AIDS in Africa. With the purchase of certain Apple products on Black Friday, Apple will give away (RED)-branded iTunes gift cards. Proceeds of all Apple products sold on Cyber Monday, which is World AIDS Day, will go towards (RED). The company also encouraged developers to create in-app purchases that will be donated towards the charity starting today. For example, in Zynga’s CSR Racing game, you can buy a special (RED) Mercedez-Benz. All proceeds from those in-app purchases from those participating apps will go to (RED) until December 7. Other games cooperating so far are Kim Kardashian: Hollywood, Monument Valley, Clash of Titans, Threes!, and FIFA 15.
Apple has worked with the Global Fund and (RED) since it launched in 2006 and has so far contributed over $75 million in (RED) sales.
