500px is a popular photo site for photographers, much like Flickr. Sounds innocent enough right? Well, Apple removed their app from the App Store after over 1 million downloads in the 16 months it was available, citing ‘pornographic content’ as the reason.
500px does have some nudity, much like Tumblr and Flickr but it certainly isn’t the majority of images and it isn’t pornographic in nature. In fact to access these images you have to create an account on the service and disable SafeSearch on the desktop site. Despite this, Apple felt it was still too easy to access the material.
500px can still be accessed (along with the nude images) through various third party apps that use the API. Just the official application has been removed. And of course it isn’t the only way to access nude photos on iOS – you could use Tumblr or Flickr to do much the same thing, and of course Safari will take you to any site you want (as long as it doesn’t have flash).
Some rumors are circulating that 500px recently had a problem with child pornography, but the executives at the company say this is the first they’ve heard of such complaints.
