A new report from Informa Telecoms and Media suggests that retailers are starting to recommend the Samsung Galaxy S III over the iPhone 5 when they used mystery shoppers.
Smaller brands such as ZTE, Motorola, LG and BlackBerry didn’t get nearly as much recommendations, showing how much Samsung and Apple dominate the smartphone market (they now have a combined 99% of the profits in the smartphone market).
Apple only got two sales assistant recommendations (3 and Phones 4 U), both for the iPhone 5. Both brands had strong in-store advertising, but sales assistants were far more likely to recommend Samsung devices like the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II.
It’s quite a logical decision to make though – everyone already knows about the iPhone thanks to Apple’s extensive marketing and brand recognition. If a customer wants an iPhone, they’ll ask for it. If they aren’t sure, they probably already looked at the iPhone and weren’t impressed. Samsung on the other hand, sell similarly high quality products but customers may not know about them.
The Samsung Galaxy S IV is expected to be launched in Monaco next month. The Galaxy S III has been on the market since May 2012.
