Apple has redesigned the keyboard on the new 12” MacBook to make the laptop less than half an inch thick. The new keyboard will have what is called a “butterfly” mechanism. It will improve typing precision while decreasing the travel of the keys, which will provide very little feedback to the user. Further, the new MacBook will have separate lights under each key, to save on energy use and reduce light spillage. Finally, the new computer will use a different font on the keys, called San Francisco, compared to VAG Rounded as has been used since 1999.
The new MacBook will ship on April 10 and will cost $1,299 as a base price. It will have a Force Touch trackpad, Retina display, and just one USB-C port.
