Apple to buy vulnerable forestland to make sustainable packaging

The Conservation Fund and Apple have teamed up to purchase over 32,400 acres in Maine and more than 3,600 acres in North Carolina for preservation. The forestland will be sustainably harvested and will provide Apple with timber for paper and pulp mills. According to the published report from the tech giant

Apple believes that paper, like energy, can be a renewable resource so Apple is striving to supply 100 percent of the virgin fibers used in its paper and packaging from sustainably managed forests or controlled wood sources.

The forest in Maine, called the Reed Forest, has rivers, upland forest, and wetlands that are home to northern goshawks, bald eagles, and Canada lynx. The Brunswick Forest in North Carolina is beside the Green Swamp Preserve and has unusual flowers and plants and high-quality savannas.
