In the latest court battle with Samsung, Apple was given a mixed ruling by the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C.According to a report by The Toronto Sun, a patent infringement verdict was upheld but the portion of the decision stating that the iPhone’s appearance could be protected under a trademark was tossed. So what does that mean for Apple? Basically, almost half (40 percent, to be precise) of the verdict the company won will now have to be reconsidered, which translates to about $372 million.
Apple put out a statement supporting the decision, saying “This is a victory for design and those who respect it.”
Samsung officials were also pleased. Shares went up 2.6 percent after the decision in Seoul. A statement from Samsung said “We remain confident that our products do not infringe on Apple’s design patents and other intellectual property, and we will continue to take all appropriate measures to protect our products.”
