For a week now, the Greek government has had capital controls in place and this is affecting a lot of things no one thought about. People can’t take money out of the country, and have limits on how much they can withdraw at one time. This has resulted in several companies not accepting payments from Greek credit cards, including PayPal and Apple’s App Store and iTunes.
According to a report by Buzzfeed, Greek users can’t even buy single songs that cost €0.99, because that is included in the “leaving the country” restriction. iPhone users cannot download apps, either. PayPal has said it can’t legally accept funds that will leave the country: “We are carefully monitoring the situation in Greece and progress of negotiations between the Greek government and its lenders. Due to the recent decisions of the Greek authorities on capital controls, funding of PayPal wallet from Greek bank accounts, as well as cross-border transactions funded by any cards or bank accounts are currently not available.”
Paywalled news services are also blocked, and so are online cloud storage services. This means lots of people are at risk of losing their backed up data.
