Apple has started their countdown to the 50 billionth download in the App Store – at the time of writing, it was roughly 700 million downloads away. We estimate that this will take less than two weeks to happen.
Apple has promised that the person who downloads the 50 billionth app will get a $10,000 App Store gift card, as they’ve done in the past for 25 billion downloads. They’ll also give $500 gift cards to the next 50 people who buy apps after they hit 50 billion.
Apple’s App Store has been a huge success, and it’s made the iOS platform incredibly popular. It’s well thought of by developers, who have found that people tend to buy more on iOS. This may be because they’ve already entered their card details to use iTunes, so therefore buying things is easier.
Apple has listed the most popular apps of all time (both free and paid) on the App Store – Angry Birds and Facebook for the iPhone, and Apple’s Pages and Microsoft Skype for the iPad.
Last time Apple counted down from 700m apps, it took 15 days to reach the milestone, so it’ll likely be faster this time due to the rewards that Apple is offering.
