iPhone 5S to include sapphire-covered convex home button with fingerprint sensor?

There is a new report from Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst for KGI Securities, that says the iPhone 5S might include a new sapphire-covered home button that can house a fingerprint sensor.

This would be shift from the concave shape home buttons that have been used since the iPhone was released in 2007. A shift to the convex shape would give Apple more space to include a fingerprint sensor. Currently the Lightning connector, speaker, and microphone has to be housed underneath the home button so it's already a crowded place. There would also be a move to sapphire since it's less likely to get scratched and the convex shape increases the risk of scratching.

There is an issue with the shape though – this could make the iPhone uneven when it's laid face-down, which could be annoying.

Rumors about this started back in May although the source for that rumor lacked any sort of track record so we couldn't really comment on it's reliability.

The iPhone 5S is expected to be announced at Apple's upcoming media event on the 10th of September. It'll then be launched just a few weeks later (as per previous iPhone announcements).
