Apple started offering the 5S on Friday and in less than two days it’s already out of stock in all 11 launch countries. Shipping dates are all pushed back to October. Likewise retail stock was depleted at the various Apple stores around the world. Carrier stores will probably also be out of stock. Some U.S. cellular carriers said that inventory was “grotesquely” low last Tuesday. Most carrier stores only got a few 5S units and none of the gold color option.
The first stock to deplete was the gold options, which was rumored to have very limited stocks at launch. They were then quickly offered on eBay for upwards of $1,000. The next model to sell out was the 64GB “Space Gray” version. The silver color took the longest to sell out, possibly because it’s the only color that hasn’t changed since last year.
This model took longer to sell out than the iPhone 5 did at launch although that be because it’s only an "S" release, which usually get less attention. The cheaper iPhone 5C might have also taken some sales.
