Editorial: 7 reasons why you may want to wait to upgrade to iOS 7

Okay, so you’ve read my Part One and Part Two talking about the changes made to Apple operating system. Does it sound awesome? Yes. Does it sound like it’s an all-new design that will breathe fresh life into your device? Yes. Should you download the update to iOS 7 RIGHT NOW? Maybe not.

Wait…what?

All of the features added, taken away, or otherwise changed about iOS 7 make it truly fantastic, yes. Millions of people installed it in the first few days it was available. Not all of those people are happy about their decision.

Here are some reasons why you may want to wait.

  1. Remember: this is still very much a work in progress, and unless you’re prepared to deal with issues that arise out of a first-release of an all-new operating system, don’t do it. Hold back. Wait for a while until some updates have been released fixing the bugs.
  2. Related to point number one is the fact that not all your apps are going to work with the new OS.
  3. Your older device (4, 4S, and anything other than a New iPad) might not support iOS 7 very well. It might really slow down your device. It might drain your battery much faster than you like. It might not be worth it for you to EVER upgrade to iOS 7, particularly until you get a newer device.
  4. Unless you have an actual reason to have to upgrade, like being tasked with the job of writing a series of editorials on the subject, don’t do it. Just because it looks cool and you want to try it are no reasons to risk affecting your productivity. If you’re going to hate your life if iOS 7 slows you down even an iota, wait.
  5. You can’t go back. There’s no way to delete iOS 7 and return to your version of iOS 6 if you decide you don’t like it.
  6. If your device is jailbroken and you want to keep it as-is, don’t download the update.
  7. There’s a steep learning curve. If you’re not much of a tech-savvy person, hate learning new things, or just feel a bit hesitant about an all-new operating system, wait. Wait for the bugs to be ironed out and make sure that when you finally do upgrade, you have time to learn how to use it. Don’t, for example, download it right before a big meeting.

This list is by no means exhaustive, but cover the main parts of why you might want to hold back from an immediate upgrade to iOS 7. Eventually, everyone will have it, but right now, unless you have a major reason to upgrade you should probably wait. Apple will come out with some updates in the next few weeks or months that will fix any issues, and you’ll get to sit back and read reviews about everyone else’s woes with the operating system in the meantime. Let them find the problems.
