How to Draw (Free Lessons) app review: learn to draw

Reviews

Introduction

Have you always wanted to learn how to draw but felt like it was way out of your reach? There is no reason to feel that way when you could be using the How to Draw (Free Lessons) app and educate yourself on the basics of drawing.

Video Tutorials

This app teaches you the steps and basics of drawing through 18 video tutorials. The tutorials are made to be easy to follow so even the most amateur of artists can follow along and enjoy success. The point here isn’t to overwhelm you rather it is to give you confidence and skills that you can then build upon on your own moving forward.

You will be able to learn how to draw flowers, cartoon characters, graffiti, the human figure, street scenes, and plenty more. Don't worry: the directions are step-by-step so you aren't left confused on what to do next. The app also offers a number of techniques and tips when it comes to pencil drawings.

One con about this one is that you'll need to be connected to the Internet if you want to use it. That doesn't make it very flexible. It would be nice obviously to have at least some offline content.

Taking You Through the Steps

Of course the question on your mind is probably how easy are the steps to follow? I am in no way, shape, or form any kind of artist so I am the perfect example of a beginner. Yes the app takes you through things step-by-step but I still found it went through the steps a little quick. I would have liked to see them slowed down and maybe discussed in a little more depth.

If you are like me and find it is moving too fast you can always pause the video and replay a particular instruction. I find myself doing that pretty often. I also wish each step showed up larger on the screen. Sometimes it is hard to make out all the details you need to be adding in a particular part when the image is that small.

The user interface is a bit limited and dull, especially considering this is an app about drawing! You would think the user interface would be a bit more pleasing to the eye. It is easy to use, however, so that works in its favor.

Final Thoughts

For me the How to Draw app is just mediocre. While it’s not the worst one out there it’s far from the best. I have enjoyed the tutorials but I don’t think I’d return to them or use this app on an ongoing basis.
