Fonts app review: find out what different fonts look like at different point sizes

Reviews

Introduction

If you’re a developer who is looking to try out different fonts to see what is available then this app is ideal for you. The app also lets you experiment with different point sizes until you find a font that is absolutely perfect for your requirements.

I can’t imagine myself having much of a use for an app like this because you can’t copy text or affect the way text appears in other apps, but if you want a quick reference for seeing what different font styles look like at different sizes then you really can’t go wrong with Fonts.

Fontastic!

I should probably start by mentioning the note that the developer has left on the iTunes description page which says the following: “This application is for developers who want to see what fonts are available and how they look at various point sizes. This application does NOT change the actual font used by the system, nor can it change the font used by other applications.”

The interface used in this app is very simple and straightforward, and I like the way the list of fonts is all available on a single page. This lets you easily scroll through until you find the one you’re looking for.

If you tap the menu icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen, you’ll be presented with some different options for editing the way the fonts are demonstrated, so whether you want simple ABC letters or you prefer “The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog,” all your angles are covered.

Fonts, Fonts, and More Fonts

Once you’ve decided how you’d like each font to be presented, you can tap on one of them from the main list view in order to bring up the Font Detail screen and take a closer look.

You can swipe the bar along the bottom of the screen to adjust the size of the font and I think this is ideal for seeing how big or small you can go with a font before the quality begins to deteriorate.

You can also tap the Unicode button in the top-right corner to bring up a selection of all the different characters available in the font, as well as tapping the Sets button to see all of the different Script Character Sets available for that font.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Dozens upon dozens of fonts to choose from
  • Adjust font sizes until you find the perfect fit
  • Vast collections of Unicode sets
  • Simplistic layout

Cons

  • You cannot export text styles into other apps or insert custom text

Final Words

As a developer and a web designer it can sometimes be difficult to figure out exactly what styles of text and graphics to go for, but I think that with an app like Fonts at your disposal, it’ll be a lot easier to experiment with fonts and shave a little time off of the process as a whole.
