'JAZZ: Trump's Journey' Trumps The Platformer Competition

JAZZ: Trump’s Journey is not a game in which you play the role of The Donald and explore New Orleans for ways to make money off of the burgeoning Jazz movement. Trump (like trumpet, get it?) is the video game moniker of Louis Armstrong, and JAZZ: Trump’s Journey is one of the more awesome platform games available for the iPhone and iPad. Seriously. JAZZ thrusts players into early 20th century New Orleans, where they play out the story of Louis Armstrong’s early life and ascendency to stardom. While this fact in and of itself would have been about enough to suck me in and never let me out, it turns out the game is just all around fantastic in ever other way possible.

First, the graphics. Awesome. The world is bright and colorful, and the game runs as smoothly as  any other game I’ve played. From Trump himself, to the other musicians that join your band along the way, to Trump’s mother, to Trump’s lover, to the detectives whose heads you have to stomp on to get them out of your way, everything is smooth and polished and fun. Even the way the cut scenes play out (and there are a number of them), turning your iPhone into a silent movie theater, complete with the clicking of a film reel in the background and white dialogue on a grainy black background, is a joy. As a rule, I don’t generally have patience for cut scenes on a tiny screen, but these are great, and I love them.

The other department in which the game really stands out far above it’s competitors is the soundtrack. So rarely is there a game in which the soundtrack just sounds like actual music, let alone music that is fun and actually great to listen to. The music really makes JAZZ shine. Combine this with the perfectly designed control system and the fact that this game is just the right amount of difficulty, and you’ve got a real winner. Honestly though, if all of you internet people out there with iPhones love platformers (which you probably do, because who doesn’t), this is the one to get. Everything about this game is great.
