Air hockey is a fast-paced game that will test your reflexes. The free version of this app gives you Free Skate Mode where you are given two minutes to work on practicing your shots without any defenders getting in the way. Then you can move on to the one-timing skills where you will be trying your best to get the biscuit between the pipes.

Of course if you upgrade to the full version you'll get a lot more features and options including classic mode that gives you three periods of classic two on two hockey. You will also get free skate mode, local high score boards, sound and music volume controls, and global high score boards.

The app has a classic arcade feel to it and I love that it uses the old-time hockey tunes to really pump you up. There is even a crowd cheering you on just to add to the excitement.

Not the Most Intuitive

As for the gameplay I must say I have some mixed feelings on it. On the one hand I love the classic feel, and the graphics are pretty fun; however, I don’t find the controls to be wonderfully intuitive. I find the players are a bit slow to respond, which then affects the puck and your game in general.

The other thing that hinders this game a bit is the fact that there are pop-ups whenever you try to navigate the app. Of course this is to be expected in a free version but it is annoying nonetheless.

The scoreboard is very unimpressive I find it hard to believe this is the best it can be? It is dull and lifeless and certainly doesn’t seem to fit in with the game.

Users seem to be pretty mixed on this app as well so it seems as though I’m not alone. They are features you love and there are ones that you are left scratching your head over.

Final Thoughts

I enjoy a good hockey app as much as the next person but I’m afraid the Slapshot Frenzy™ Ice Hockey Free app seems to fall short in many areas that include gameplay, graphics, and overall feel. I realize it’s free but I still think you can find better than this even in the free category.
