'Monster Wars' Undermined By Superfluity Of Words

Reviews

Liv Games has produced a game named Monster Wars, an interactive monster/undead game with a lot of potential for growth.  Upon entering Campaign Mode, you are immediately immersed in a storybook, laying forth the background of the game.  For the sake of brevity, the monsters lie in your hands, and it is your job to pit the various monsters against the humans through pillaging their villages, destroying their forts, and fighting the various knights. You begin in the tutorial stage as a Deadknight, where Grimly Gremlin narrates the game layout for you.  The options are one of three paths on the screen (top, middle, bottom) along which you can send your monster.  Along the way you can switch paths and tap skulls, boxes, or enemies to begin fighting/destroying them.  After defeating enemies, you collect Souls, which are collected in the upper left hand of your screen.  Once the Soul Meter is full, you have the ability to use your special attack by pressing the skull icon.  In addition, you can release several monsters at once upon mining gems via Grimly Goblin.

One of the unique portions of the game is the Crypt, which is located on the screen via a purple portal icon.  In the Crypt, where you can use your gems in updating and improving your monsters.  Categories for your monster include their speed, attack, critical hit percentage, and specials.  Furthermore, if you acquire any Soulstones during your battles, you have the ability to exchange them for other monsters. As far as overall enjoyment goes, however, there are many lengthy explanations and an overwhelming amount of information put forth from the get-go.  So much so that you do not feel connected to any particular character and simply become frustrated that you have to wander your way through all of the reading before playing.  Combined with the limited motion of your monsters and their Lemming-like capabilities, it seems as though there is too much going on in order to be fully excited about playing the game.
