Reference information is only available to licensed healthcare professionals. Free Continuing Medical Education/Continuing Education (CME/CE) credits are available. Over 30 specialty fields of medicine are represented here, as well as annual coverage of over 60 meetings and symposia.

Main Page

Delivery of news to healthcare professionals is the primary function of this app. This is well-executed with a clean layout and intuitive navigation. MedPage Today's award winning medical news coverage is written with healthcare professionals in mind. Releases are delivered with an optional notification alert to your device.

The main screen has a navigation panel on the left third of your screen with your News, Education, and Resources sections.  News articles are divided into eight topics: Infection Diseases, Allergy & Immunology, Business, Hospital-Based Medicine, Pathology, Policy, Public Health, and Research.

The remaining screen is utilized for article headings with one breaking new article given the top spot with a short description.

News Articles and Meeting Summaries

When you select a specific article, it is presented on its own page that is easily read. There are four buttons on the top right corner to add a comment, change the font, share, and save. A single button on the top left corner labeled “Back” easily and intuitively returns you to the main page.  The right third of the screen is used for advertising and author’s bio.  Another button to add a comment is presented at the bottom of the article. Adding a comment is as simple as clicking either button and a pop-up text field will appear. Your name is pre-filled on the form. Once you hit submit, the comment is sent for review prior to publication.

Education and Resources

Education and Resources each have sections that look promising. Education requires you to register with the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. Healthcare providers get CME/CE for reading articles and watching videos. The Resources section is divided further into sections for drugs, diseases, procedures, clinical checklists, and lab advisors.  Neither of these sections were available for me to review due to the license requirements.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Breaking medical news
  • FREE CME/CE credit
  • In-depth, live conference, and meeting coverage

Cons

  • Most resources only available to licensed healthcare providers
  • Font change only available in each article page

Final Thoughts

MedPage Today is a great app for healthcare providers; it provides a clinical perspective on current medical news. However, due to the specialized and technical nature of the writing and vocabulary, the general public may struggle to understand the concepts and find useful information from the articles. This app is highly recommended for healthcare providers and patients wanting to learn more.
