Picture collage apps have been around for a while now; I'm sure you already use one, but InstaVid for Instagram is something a little different. Not only can you create collages of photos for sharing on your favorite social network, but you can now make a collage of your videos.

If you're like me and share photo collages on a daily basis, the thought of adding the ability to do the same with videos is very intriguing. With the addition of sharing videos on Instagram, this app could be a great addition and new way to share your visual story.

The Art of the Collage

If you've used any of the other collage apps out there, the interface of InstaVid will be something you are used to. Pick your frames of two or more photos, add the pictures you like, and share it any way you like. InstaVid has all those features with one added bonus: you can now collage your videos. Whether you use a saved video or create one on the fly, the ability to stitch them together in one divided frame is a really cool concept.

You can include up to nine videos in one frame. The one condition is that each clip can be no longer than 15 seconds, which is the time limit for video sharing on Instagram. You can even add custom audio, be it something you record at the moment or a song from your iTunes playlist to give your video collage some additional flair.

It works incredibly well; all your videos will play simultaneously in the frame with your selected audio. It's an interesting effect, especially if you use unrelated video clips.

Stitching and Sharing

Instavid does have a few drawbacks. The free version does not allow you to adjust the size, color, and shadows in the frame. You also can't play each video individually once it's saved. I think this would be a welcome addition to the app, as trying to watch nine images at the same time can be visually straining.

There are a few pop-up ads included in the app, but these are hardly intrusive or unexpected. The full process of rendering your final video collage is surprisingly fast: it took just under two minutes and that included my selected audio track. You have the opportunity to preview the final product before you save it to your library or share it instantly via the app to Facebook and Instagram.

Final Thoughts

InstaVid for Instagram works incredibly well and is a great new way to share your videos and photos with friends. It's charming, easy, and fun. I'm very interested in how subsequent updates of this app will affect the app.

The ability to collage your videos with a custom soundtrack is a great idea. There is little wrong with the layout and performance of InstaVid. I suggest you give this app a try, as it's something different and an interesting spin on the collage app.
