'Off The Leash' Offers Hilarious Blend of Style and Sound

Reviews

An evil police chief has taken over and an all points bulletin is out: Dogs are banned. What’s a four-legged fugitive to do? Run, of course. In Big Pixel Studios’ Off The Leash, players must run far and fast, freeing other dogs from oppressive owners to join the pack before time expires and the police stop the escape. Collect steaks, chicken legs, watermelons, ice creams and bones to level up and enter bonus levels full of coins. Coins are everywhere and the currency of Off The Leash. Magnets pick up stray coins, clocks add a few seconds to the timer and chilies give a speed boost. The controls are simple. Hold the phone flat for optimum control and tilt to move left or right, portrait-wise. Off The Leash cannot be played in either vertical nor landscape position. Graphics and sound effects share a delightfully comical appeal, both in simplicity and wit that can be found in levels and menu screens.

If players have a big pack but a small space ahead, holding a finger on the screen will bring the puppies in a line but slows everything down. If a dog doesn’t make it to a checkpoint in time, a dog-snatching police barricade awaits. Despite it signaling the end, watching a whole pack slam into the barricade cracks me up every time. A barricade isn’t the only thing dogs should avoid. Bushes can knock a puppy out of the pack and water slows things down, let alone what lurks in the water. First level objectives include collecting 100 coins in one game, reach 500 meters and pick up 20 dogs. Players get 5 golden whistles to ward off barricades and continue running. The Game Over screen has plenty of statistics to go over: coins, food eaten, dogs collected, distance and score. Players can tweet their score or check the leaderboards. OpenFeint compares high scores, unlocks achievements and saves game data. Game data will automatically be stored securely on the OpenFeint servers. The pop up for OpenFeint at initial startup is the only diversion players will see. Ads are non-existent in Off The Leash. For a free game, that is a huge relief. Save up coins and head to the Store at the main menu to purchase headwear, whistles and various utilities such as a golden magnet or golden chilli. Each headwear item has an amusing description and coin prices vary by item. Players can also purchase coins in the store. Double coins or 50,000 coins for $0.99, 250,000 coins for $2.99, 500,000 coins for $4.99 and 1,500,000 coins for $9.99.

Head to the doghouse at the main menu and unlock seven dogs then customize them with items purchased in the store. Each dog is rated on speed, agility and strength along with an amusing description. Off The Leash is a hilarious blend of style and sound with simple game mechanics and deep customization that will keep players on the run. It’s also notable that Off The Leash is ad-free. For a free game, that makes Off The Leash unique. AppPicker Rating 5 / 5 Stars App Store link: Off the Leash Other apps by Big Pixel Studios
