Become A Hotel Mogul In Mesmerizing 'Monopoly Hotels'

Reviews

Electronic Arts and Hasbro teamed up to create Monopoly Hotels, a new and exciting spin-off of the classic Monopoly game.  While this game doesn't involve a board (and not even the cool game tokens like the dog or race car), it has a very similar soundtrack to the computer version of Monopoly, with added sounds when you spend cash, build a room, or pay the electric company.  Plus, with streams of colored money constantly falling from the sky (if only this happened in real life!), it is a very involved and animated game. Each time you use the app, the game takes some time to load, which is not a big issue considering the amount of features in the game.  During loading, the game makes quirky statements directly above the loading bar such as "dusting off the welcome mat..." or "walking the dogs...", which is a fun addition instead of leaving you at a loading screen.

After the game loads, you are introduced to Mr. Monopoly, a rounded, colorful, cartoon character sporting a top hat and suit.  He walks you through the game for the first time using yellow speech bubbles and a large, gloved hand to point out features and icons in the game.  Mr. Monopoly stays with you and explains the ins and outs of managing your hotel, and upon purchasing a second hotel, the tutorial ends and the game begins. The overall objective of the game is to constantly keep your hotels running and catering them towards the guests they house.  By clicking on the hammer icon in the lower right of the screen, you have the ability to build Guest Rooms, VIP Rooms, Attractions, or Decorations. You start out with the basics and can unlock more rooms, attractions, and decorations as you progress, earning a higher level of experience and more money. In order to install a room, you simply drag the room to the location you desire in the hotel, and double tap it to secure it.  After building it (displayed by a saw icon) and then painting it (displayed by a paint brush icon), you can finish the room to be used.  Don't forget, however, to stop by the Electric Company and pay up, otherwise the power will go out and your guests will not be happy.  When the bill is low, the lights will flicker, and you have a few seconds to pay before it turns off. Another interesting factor in the game is the number of characters introduced.  They help you by narrating the story and are saved in the Guest Book, the icon of which is located in the lower left and resembles a curtain.  These characters, the likes of which include Betsy, Sunny, Ms. Munnypurse, and Eleanor among others, give you objectives to complete via the Sticker Book.  These objectives include anything from building a hotel only out of Guest Rooms to building a Cannon Room and a Thimble Room in the same building.  There is even a thief named Jake the Jailbird, who will frequently plague your hotels; make sure to click on him in order to catch him and receive an award.

Monopoly Hotels is very enjoyable and is especially bolstered by the host of interesting characters constantly milling about the screen.  While the characters mill about, colored Monopoly money falls from the sky in addition to the occasional Community Chest card (roll the dice and receive 10 times your roll in Monopoly money!). I haven't found myself bored with this app because I feel as though I always have to think ahead and plan for my next move.  It can be frustrating, however, as I have yet to find out if there is a 'Pause' button anywhere.  And although the app is not close to what managing a real hotel is like, it is certainly amusing to try and run your own pseudo hotel in a lighthearted environment.
