Penguin Madness app review: drag and drop ice blocks to score massive combos

Reviews

Introduction

This is a very fun and cutesy little puzzle game which requires that you drag and drop colored Tetris-style ice blocks on a grid in order to create rows and columns before the time runs out. This will have you saving penguin-kind as you rack up some almighty high scores with impressive points combos.

This is actually a pretty fun game, and although I can’t imagine myself playing it for a particularly long time, I would definitely recommend checking it out because it provides a nice kind of hybrid style of gameplay which is somewhere between Tetris and Columns, with some great originality thrown in for good measure.

I’ve found the control system to be a little unresponsive at times when it comes to rotating blocks on the game field, but this might just me being dense so I’d suggest giving it a go and seeing how well you can handle it yourself.

Pick Up a Penguin

When you first start playing Penguin Madness, you’ll most likely want to check out the Instructions section as this contains a basic overview of the different game modes, the control system, and the requirements for each mode so that you know exactly what to do when you jump into the action.

From here, you’ll want to tap New Game, and seeing as you’re new to the game, I’d suggest checking out the Relax Game mode as this doesn’t impose any time restrictions and allows you to get to grips with the gameplay mechanics at your own pace.

My favorite section of the game is the Story Game mode as this features more of an element of progression as you move around the world in an attempt to save your fellow flightless friends who have become frozen in blocks of ice.

Flightless Frivolities

The Madness Game mode offers a slightly more intense spin on Story Game mode as it imposes a rather tough time restriction on each move you make. If you hesitate for even a few seconds you’re going to find yourself in a rather sticky situation.

I think this is a pretty decent game overall which looks very nice and features a funny, albeit somewhat repetitive soundtrack which seems to complement to overall feel of Penguin Madness very effectively.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Maneuver Tetris-style ice blocks in this penguin puzzler
  • Work through a hundred baffling puzzles in Classic Game mode
  • Learn the basics without a time restriction in Relax Game mode
  • Save your penguin buddies from blocks of ice in Story Game mode
  • Crank things up a notch in Madness Game mode

Cons

  • Rotating blocks is a little temperamental from time to time

Final Words

Penguin Madness isn’t exactly the flashiest-looking iOS game I’ve come across but there is a very impressive amount of content here, both in terms of the game modes available and the actual number of levels in each. Waddle over to the App Store and check it out!
