Saxophone Dots app review: carry your saxophone with you

Reviews

Introduction

How would you like to be able to carry around your own musical instrument no matter where you are? That's what you can do with the Saxophone Dots app: play with a saxophone anytime you want. There are 60 saxophone sounds you can play with all sorts of added features and tools. This app is ideal for both kids and adults and works well as casual gameplay or passing hours at a time.

Your Digital Music Experience

This isn't just a musical experience: it's talked up to be some kind of digital musical experience which is a whole other level of fun. Now it should be noted that in order to enjoy this app to its fullest, it's best on the iPhone. The reason for this is that the iPhone offers a long screen so you can take full advantage of the keys.

The way the app works is by touch so just drag your fingers around on the screen and you will hear the notes. You don't even have to lift your fingers; just drag them around. The app offers adjustable volume so if you're not in a spot where loud instruments are ideal it's not an issue.

Because the app is free it is supported by ads, which can be removed for $0.99. For me the ads aren’t something that interferes with the app so I don’t find it’s worth it to remove them.

Gameplay

The user interface is incredibly simple, so simple that even young children can play it. I’m not sure I would call this a saxophone app because it sounds more like a digital piano keyboard. In fact the sounds are a bit obnoxious and high-pitched which is maybe not something you want the kids to discover after all!

There are absolutely no added features, tools, or customization options here. Everything is extremely basic.

I don’t see how this app would keep you busy for much longer than a few minutes at a time. It would be great if there were musical sheets you could maybe follow along with, or play along with other songs rather than just dragging your finger around on the screen making random sounds that don’t seem to connect with each other.

The idea of the app is cute and fun but it just seems like there were a lot of missed opportunities to make this better.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Very user-friendly
  • Can be played by adults and kids
  • Drag your finger around on the dots to play the sounds

Cons

  • The app is ad-supported
  • Absolutely no added features or tools
  • Extremely basic in gameplay
  • I wouldn’t describe the sounds as a saxophone

Final Thoughts

The Saxophone Dots app is strictly meant for casual gameplay and even at that it really doesn’t leave me impressed or rushing to come back for more. It just seems like it could do with more features or tools to at least make the game a bit more fun.
