Government Organization and Employees app review: a mobile version of Title 5 USC

Reviews

Introduction

If you've ever tried looking through, or worse yet, lugging around a government handbook, then you know exactly how heavy and cumbersome it can be. The Government Organization and Employees app allows you to carry with you the complete text of Title 5 USC on your mobile device. You will be able to flip through content that is current through 110th Congress 2nd Session.

Convenient and Flexible

Consider this a convenient and flexible option over carrying a heavy book around with you. This app gives you offline access so no matter where you are, you can use it. Just like many eReader apps this one gives you a number of features and tools to enhance the experience for you and also make it work for you.

This free version of the app allows you to download USC Titles 1 through 3. This a great way to give the app a trial run to see if it's for you. All the USC Titles are available, however, though the App Store. This is strictly a reference app so don’t go into this one expecting fancy graphics and high-tech features. The goals is convenience and flexibility as mentioned.

Using the App

Because this app features complete offline access you know you'll be able to use it no matter where you are. You have the ability to do a full-text search which can really be helpful when you are looking for something specific. There is also a header-only search option, content-sensitive search, and you can save your search history so you can go back at any time and review what you have searched.

There are a number of helpful features/tools such as the ability to email particular sections, the ability to perform search highlighting, and you can use the bookmark tool. Additional features include being able to change the font size so reading is more comfortable, turning the contextual search feature on/off, and sending the content by email. At any point you can print the information, remove the highlights, or even report a content error.

As far as using the app goes I find it’s quite user-friendly. There is an awful lot of information here but it has somehow managed to present it in a clear and user-friendly manner. The app has garnered fairly average ratings from users as it seems they are satisfied but not blown away.
