Shots of Me app review: the social network devoted to selfies

Reviews

Introduction

If you are obsessed with taking photos of yourself (aka selfies) then the Shots of Me app is right up your alley. This is the social network that's all about selfies. Hopefully as Shots of Me gets more popular, fewer selfie photos will be clogging up my Instagram feed.

Two Powerful Groups Come Together To Battle Trolls

There are two groups of people who are clearly dominating the Internet: the people who love taking selfies and The Beliebers. So why not combine the two into one mighty social network, you ask? They have and the name is the Shots of Me app. This was one of the tech startups that Justin Bieber invested in and was the first to be launched. I do have to say they may be onto something here.

The layout is stellar. Each user's photos butts up to the next with no text feed in-between. I'll explain why momentarily. There aren't even borders between the pictures which provides a nice, natural free-flow to the photo feed. Yes you will see the user's comments on the photos and the number of "likes" it has gotten but that's it.

The text feed between user's photos has been removed for one reason, and it's actually a really good one: to cut down on trolls. For those of you reading who don't understand or know about the "troll culture" we now live in online, I'll explain. A "troll" is a term reserved for those people who do nothing but comment negatively on any blog, status, feed, image, or basically anything or anyone they can insult or cut down to make themselves feel superior. That is a "troll" and the Internet is full of them.

What Shots of Me has done is completely remove the comments section from the photo feed. You can like a photo, or message the user directly which successfully removes the "troll" nature of most other social networks out there. This is a great thing, and the developers of Shots of Me deserve a pat on the back for adding this feature.

All This Comes With A Price

It costs 99 cents to download the Shots of Me app, which really isn't that expensive. However there are no filters or effects built into the iPhone selfies app. Once you snap your selfie you can crop it and post it. There is a button for effects but it is emblazoned with a banner that says "Coming Soon." So hopefully in the near future effects and filters will be added.

I have to say that I was also surprised by how many users this app has gotten in such a short time. I know the majority are from Justin's fan base, but he's also brought in some of his famous friends to create accounts. I can't explain how surprised I was to find Floyd Mayweather posting a selfie in the feed. But this is a great marketing ploy; of course the Beliebers will join but the staff has been smart enough to broaden the user base by bringing in the fans of other celebrities.

Final Thoughts

I must admit I am pleasantly surprised with the Shots of Me app. Selfies aren't really my thing, but if they are yours this is the best way to share them. The developers have gone out of the way to make Shots of Me fun, easy, troll-free and they have excelled at it. If you love taking self photos, without having to deal with jerks leaving brutal comments, then download Shots of Me you will definitely enjoy it.
