Reviews

“Interacting with current events” is a slogan we hear a lot from today on networks like the BBC and CNN and as a means for news agencies themselves to keep up with current breaking stories, more and more do they require the citizen journalist to help deliver that news. So you now have the latest iPad news app to help deliver the news to you and from you to them.
Top 7 News AppsCNN App for iPad
Whatever you may think of CNN and their airbrushed journalists, from nearly 2000 ratings this app averages 4 out of 5 stars. Its latest version 1.5.1 doesn’t include any major updates except a little more advertising! Now you get an add before and after every video you watch which makes navigation slow and annoying. It’s free so you can’t complain but having an add blocker of some kind will surely follow.
Top 7 News AppsBBC News
The BBC news app is probably one of the highest rated free apps. Its latest version gets 4.5 stars from 2766 ratings and there are no recent complaints listed by users. The recent updates include a Facebook log-in issue, improved voice-over support, Twitter sharing improvement, a bug fix for when it crashed playing audio on iOS3 and a few compatibility fixes. Otherwise it’s regarded as very reliable.
Top 7 News AppsBloomberg TV+
No cable or satellite accounts are required for this App. The visuals for Bloomberg are said to be exceptional allowing you to watch live TV, with all up to date financial, stock news and a whole host more. Bloomberg West for example was not always available to viewers in certain locations at certain times of the day but the iPad app cuts right through this providing unlimited live free news! Version 1.1 has just had a few fixes that’s all.
Top 7 News AppsFlipboard
If you’re not familiar with Flipboard, this website and now app lets you pick and choose all the latest music, photos, podcasts, facebook feeds, tweets, whatever … which you can then store in your own personal magazine. On the plus side you can be listening to the latest track you flipped onto your board while flipping around other feeds. On the downside, it is known to crash depending on your OS and when looking at certain sites with embedded video’s, it keeps them in portrait meaning that you can’t exploit the space by flipping them to landscape which is frustrating and a waste of useable space.
Top 7 News AppsReuters News Pro App for iPad
With version 2.7, while Reuters apps do come very highly rated, for previous users they may find the current updates a tad annoying! Instead of a swipe to the right to return to the previous screen or hitting the back button, the app now requires you to pinch the screen to go back. Not a major headache but a shift in navigation which older users may dislike. From 5000 ratings it averages 4 stars.
Top 7 News AppsNPR iPad App
For users in Europe you may find this app particularly useful as you won’t be able to access NPR news elsewhere in most places. It’s streaming is described as extremely smooth and its interface a delight. News organizations often guarantee quality when it comes to apps for Smartphone’s but this particular app is described as being right up there – considering it’s free.
Top 7 News AppsABC News App for iPad
“If you love commercials – you’ll love this app!”: As one user describes it. That said ABC is not Fox so expect more quality live breaking news and events when available. The interface is also stylish with some excellent broadsheet articles to scroll through. It gets an average 3.5 star rating from just over 2000.
