More Movie than Book
As mentioned above, Hansel and Gretel ~3D Interactive Pop-up Book is extremely interactive. You can read the story but also move your characters around on the page. While listening to the text, the words are highlighted for your child to follow. Hansel and Gretel skip across the page and journey through the forest.
I downloaded this story, and several others, when Free Apps for Kids had a promotion on the 3D Interactive Pop-up Books. I figured getting a $2.99 app for free was worth a try! My five-year-old daughter loves them, and whenever she has the opportunity to play on my iPhone, she immediately goes to these for a read.
In addition to being a full Grimm story, each book contains mini-games and coloring activities. Hansel and Gretel has a sticker book which challenges your child’s visual skills as well as problem-solving skills.
There are some parts of this story that require further in-app purchase. There is an ‘unlock all now’ option for an additional $2.99, or you can get ‘unlock jigsaw pack’ or the ‘unlock puzzle pack’ options for $1.99 each.
An Original Grimm
What I like about the Hansel and Gretel ~3D Interactive Pop-up Book is that this is a story that Disney has not yet taken and altered. There are still variations, but my daughter opened it and had no expectations as she did with some of the others. She sat and listened to the story, and then we had a conversation about what happened to the children, why the witch lived in a candy house, and other funny little things. It was a great moment together.
One of my favorite things about this app is that it is not fully animated. The characters behave like paper dolls, and you get the impression that you are controlling the characters like a puppet show. I really liked this aspect of the app!
