Because this is a free version there is limited access. The way this one works is that you are given up to 10 translations per day. If you decide you want more you can upgrade to the full version that gives you unlimited translations for $6.99 or you can pick up a one-week subscription package for $1.99, which would be perfect for traveling.

Unique User Experience

What's cool about this app is that it is a visual translation service. You can point the phone at the words you want translated and then the app is able to give you the English translation. There are a few tips for using the app such as the fact that you want to make sure the image is clear. You can adjust the focus with the zoom slider. It's also best to use it on clear Chinese text and steer clear of fancy calligraphy and fonts that won't register properly. The English translation will appear right on top of the Chinese text.

Final Words

The Chinese Translator app for your iPod touch, iPad, and iPhone is a handy and flexible way to get instant translations of Chinese text. I love that you don't have to key anything in yourself and that you can view a history of your translations at any time. If you could do more then 10 translations per day, then this would be the best iPhone translation app for Chinese Mandarin.
