Yatzy Addict app review: a pass-the-dice, pass-the-time game

Reviews

Introduction

A virtual take on the classic Yahtzee game, players take turns rolling five dice to come up with the best possible scoring combination. During each turn, players have three chances to get the numbers they are searching for. Strategy, risk, and luck all come into play as users make decisions on which dice to keep, which to re-roll, and how to ultimately score his or her dice. With bonus features to optimize the classic game for the digital world on the iPhone or iPad, this free game by Robert Suh is a great time-passer for experienced and new players alike, though on rare occasions it has been known to crash mid-gameplay.

A Classic With Bonuses

All rules and regulations of the traditional Yahtzee dice game are adhered to with this application; however, additional rules can be selectively applied to fit different regional takes on the game. Scoring a ‘Yahtzee’ (a five of a kind) can be a bone of contention among regular game players. In this version, the first Yahtzee is scored as 50 points. Each additional Yahtzee is 100 points plus the score the player chooses to enter in a different box on the score sheet.

Each roll is completely random and the sound of rolling dice hitting the table can be heard in real-time thanks to near-perfect sound effects in this app. Players have the option to turn on suggestion lights in which the game can help a player choose which dice they wish to keep according to vacancies on the player’s score sheet. Beware of the suggestion dice, as the game can sometimes offer off-the-wall suggestions.

Take Your Turn

Players can choose to play single player, against the computer, against a friend via Apple’s GameCenter, or against a random player signed in to GameCenter. Chat capabilities can be turned on or off at the player’s discretion. All rolls happen in real time. As a general rule of thumb, your opponent will see exactly what you see on your device, at the same time, though scorecards remain hidden from one another. Occasionally, the app can lag on one device by a few seconds and cause a slight delay in gameplay. When the lag occurs, it is more likely for the game to misread your opponent’s move, and thus throw off the score. Though these bugs do not happen frequently, they can be frustrating. If you experience any of these flaws, completely shut down the game and have your opponent do the same before re-opening it and beginning again. In-app purchases and ads never fail to appear each time you open the application and between games.
