There are so many different language apps in the App Store that it’s hard to find one that really stands out. Most of the dictionaries only work when you’re connected to the Internet, while others are expensive or have nothing else to offer then a simple one phrase meaning per word. English Dictionary - Offline by Jordi Josa is here to change that! The app, compatible with iPad and iPhone is chock-full of content and has all the different meaning for every word listed and more! And as the name suggests, it’s available offline!

The Meaning of Words

This dictionary app has everything you might expect from a dictionary. First you can easily look at all the words by letter, very handy if you need inspiration on what to write, or if you feel you need to have a word with a specific letter to create a clever marketing sentence. Secondly there is a search function, with which you can easily find any word you don’t know the meaning of. Because the app works completely offline, the app loads very fast, especially compared to other dictionary apps, and you can use it anywhere, even if there is no connection for miles!

Other Functions

With most dictionary apps, this is where the functions would end, but not with this one. This app also moonlights as an English learning app. Full grammar explanations are included, with exercises and lessons, as well as flash cards to help you remember vocabulary and specific grammar rules. Irregular verbs are included as well. You can even make your own flashcards to help yourself learn even easier, which is very handy for if you have trouble with specific words that aren’t included in the pre-made exercises. To top it off, the app also has a hangman game available for you to practice and play at the same time. Of course the developer can’t call it HangMan, but has cleverly called the game Hang on, Man!

The only bad thing about the app is that the layout is sometimes a bit messy.

Conclusion

This is an app that I can recommend for anyone who speaks English, or want to learn how to speak English. The app is so chock-full of features, it’s hard to believe that the developer managed to fit all of this in 32 MB. Everything in the app is available offline and works smoothly. Nifty additions such as the grammar lessons, flashcards and the hangman game are really welcome, and it all fits in well together. The only downside is the design of the app, which doesn’t really fit with the iPad and iPhone compatibility. The developer should have looked more at what Apple apps look like.
