Crayola: Ruckus Reader app review: a great learning app for the youngest children

Reviews

Introduction

Educational apps for kids are in great abundance in the App Store. Most of them are stored under the educational section in the App Store, but in some cases you will find them under games or books. Crayola: Ruckus Reader for iPad by Ruckus Media Group is one of those apps. While one of the things this app can teach your child is reading, I would definitely have a closer look at my app submission process if I was the developer.

Child Friendly and Very Fun!

Within the app itself, which reminds me a bit of the Kindle app, but for kids, you will have to spend money to buy different stories for the young ones. The key word here is interactivity, as each book has loads of fun activities for your kids to complete. Luckily the first story is free and can already take up quite some time with your children while they’re picking out clothes for animals to wear and choosing Crayolas to color the different items of clothing. This app is quite obviously sponsored by the famous brand of coloring materials which makes me wonder why this app should be paid for.

Other Features

The app will not only help your children to start enjoying and interacting with stories, it will also help them to learn how to read. This is done by showing the text on the screen while a voice will read the same text out loud. This makes the app perfect for any child between the ages of three and nine and on top of that it’s easy for parents to control what they see and do. You can set the narration off or on, and your children will love to create their own stories within the books.

Within the app there are also a lot of other stories to be found for children of an older age. For parents, there is a separate page within the app, where you can keep track of what your kid has read, and set all kinds of restrictions. All books within the app follow the different levels of reading skill, so together with your child you can decide which book is the best for them to read next.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Tons of books in the shop
  • Very educational
  • All kinds of licensed books

Cons

  • The shop isn’t on the parents page, so make sure to disable in-app purchases

Conclusion

If I had any kids I wouldn’t have a doubt about getting this app. The reading is exceptionally fun and the different activities will keep kids longer engaged than some boring classroom reading task. All of the app is very colorful and easy to use, while the voices that read the stories are appropriate and fun to listen to. The app is compatible with iPad only and is just under 93 MB in size. This is a must-have book for every parent!
