A-Z Food Nutrition Facts Lite app review: a handy reference guide for people keeping track of nutrition

Reviews

Introduction

A lot of people these days, especially in the winter months after the holiday season, are obsessed with their weight, what they look like, and what they can do to change their appearance before the nice weather starts again. The change in weather means a change in the amount of clothes they wear, and therefore the amount of body they can cover up. One of the ways to lose this excessive weight is by being aware of what you eat. A-Z Food Nutrition Facts Lite for iPhone and iPad by 01 Digitales Design GMBH is an app that can help you with this goal.

Extensive Content

A-Z Food Nutrition Facts Lite gives you access to thousands of different foods and what their nutritional values are. You can search the app in many different ways: by category and just by typing in keywords in the search tab of the app. The app uses a state-of-the-art Traffic Light Labeling method, which is also used by the Food Standards Agency in the UK, and will help you know which foods are bad for you and which foods are good for you with just a quick look.

The categories in which you can browse are: beef, beverages, cereal grains & products, dairy and egg, fats, and oils. Still others are finfish and shellfish, fruits, lamb, veal and game, legumes, nuts and seeds, pork, poultry, sausages and luncheon meats, spices and herbs, and lastly vegetables.

Updated Database

The database of food is constantly updated with new information and new foods, and is ever-growing. One of the downsides of the app is that you have to be online to use this app, and in some supermarkets, where I imagine this app will be used the most, there is no connection available (and usually poor signal for 3G and 4G) for you to check the actual values for each food. Information for each food consists of, if applicable, nutrition, vitamins, minerals, micronutrients, calories, proteins, carbohydrates, fiber, fat, and salt in all the different forms the food can be consumed.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Handy reference to have with you when you’re cooking or shopping
  • Tons of in depth information
  • Easy to use and well laid out
  • Being updated constantly

Cons

  • Internet connection is required
  • No images, photos or recipes

Conclusion

All in all I think the A-Z Food Nutrition Facts Lite app covers everything it needs to. It’s good to see that the developer actually keeps his app up-to-date at all times and that new information is being implemented whenever it is made available. I would like to see this app being available offline, so you can use it everywhere, even if you don’t have an Internet connection, but I can imagine the database behind this app is quite large. At the moment the app comes in under 10 MB and is fully compatible with both iPhone and iPad.
